What is Israeli Apartheid Week?

Apartheid Week is an annual event on college campuses, featuring mock checkpoints, fake eviction notices, and problematic speakers meant to intimidate and harass students. SJP and its supporters designed the campaign specifically to alarm students and increase hostility for Jews and Zionists, all under the guise of “awareness” of Palestinian struggles.

WEEK EXPOSED

Since its 2005 inception, “Israeli Apartheid Week” has spread across North America, South Africa, Australia, and the UK. It targets Jewish and Zionist students through events, speakers, promotional materials, and demonstrations. An IAW staple is a mock “apartheid wall” on university quads, which features gross misinformation and often malicious antisemitic rhetoric.

WHAT IS THE GOAL?

“[IAW aims] to educate people about the nature of Israel as an apartheid system and to build Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaigns as part of a growing global BDS movement.”
-IAW Campaign

However, IAW is not designed to help the Palestinian people but to harm Zionist and Jewish students on campus. For example, the campaign often includes mock checkpoints designed to demonize the IDF. Their real-life equivalents were only put in place in response to Palestinian terrorism and violence.

THE REALITY

Anti-Israel groups like Students for Justice in Palestine regularly host extremist speakers. In January 2022, University of Minnesota’s SJP hosted Mohammed El- Kurd, the Nation’s Jerusalem correspondent. University departments promote and aid events like this, like when San Francisco State University planned to host convicted terrorist Leila Khaled on Zoom.

In November 2021, Vassar College’s SJP chapter hosted Eli Valley, who draws antisemitic caricatures such as “diaspora boy,” meant to portray Zionists as demonic slaves to Israel.

This is not the first time Vassar’s SJP was exposed for sharing antisemitic cartoons.

Another aspect of SJP’s antisemitism is Holocaust inversion, which posits that Israel and Zionists are the new Nazis. This horrific rhetoric is often followed by false quotes from Israel’s founders and people like Albert Einstein. Of course, the quote is fake, but it adds to the notion of “good” anti-Israel Jews and “bad” Zionist Jews.

APARTHEID WEEK
IS DANGEROUS

During IAW, activists spread falsehoods to promote boycotts of Israel and its destruction. Jewish and Zionist students have been verbally accosted and even followed on campus.

When pro-Israel students plan counter events, anti-Israel activists aggressively demonstrate, disturb the event, and threaten speakers and students.

#APARTHEIDWEEKEXPOSED

The presence of groups like SJP and events like IAW perpetuate and increase antisemitism on campus through their anti-Zionist activism. They paint the majority of the Jewish community as bigoted, bring speakers that demonize Jews, and spread outright blood libels.

If students are constantly harassed for their beliefs and ethnic identities, campus communities cannot thrive.
